Positive doping test announced

May 8, 2017

The World Anti Doping Authority (WADA) notified the ISF (International Skyrunning Federation) on April 11th that a test conducted during the 2016 Skyrunning World Championship in Spain (VK category) has resulted in a positive test for a substance called Heptaminol at the doping control on July 22, 2016.

The test, on the French athlete Christel Dewalle, was made in WADA’s accredited Laboratory in Warsaw, Poland, on September 9, 2016 and seven months later the ISF was informed that the test was positive.

According the ISF rules, the athlete and the athlete’s manager were informed of the positive result on April 25, 2017. Both the athlete and manager have responded with information to clarify the situation which can be considered as “Light Degree of Fault” (i.e. anti-doping rule violation involving a Specified Substance, with No Significant Fault or Negligence).

The ISF Management Committee was informed of the final conclusions on May 8, 2017 by the Antidoping Commission and the results are as follows:

  1. Impose a period of suspension of four (4) months from the date of the decision (May 8, 2017) until September7, 2017 inclusive.
  2. All results obtained in the 2016 Skyrunning World Championships in Spain are cancelled.

The decision was upheld by the ISF Management Committee in consideration of the global situation and medical documents supplied by the athlete.

The ISF has for many years pioneered the way for in-competition testing in multiple events year-on-year, a process begun in 1992. This positive test is a sign that the measures taken by the ISF are correct and the Federation will continue to fight for a clean sport.

As a final note, the ISF wishes to remind all athletes of the importance of strictly following the anti-doping rules in accordance with WADA.

Therefore, it is imperative that all competitors avoid all prohibited medicines, drugs, substances or methods as listed on the WADA website at https://www.wada- ama.org/en/prohibited-list and promptly communicate the eventual use of prohibited substances for therapeutic purposes in accordance with the anti-doping regulations.
