Holiday means gift-giving. You already know that.

But what isn’t normally talked about is how stressful it can be to figure out the perfect gift for everyone.

Wandering from one shop to another, checking endless pages online when you have no time for any authentic gift creativity for them, and then finally getting stuck in endless checkout lines, or slow internet, are just a few of the headaches associated with the holiday season.

Then, you are stuck wondering if all that hassle is really worth it.

Will your gifts even be used or appreciated?

Here at BUFF®, we want to help you with your next holiday event, and that is why we decided to explain easier gifting for both kids and adults and turn the holiday stress into purposeful research with the 5-gift rule.

Nobody on your list gets overlooked and you don’t get overwhelmed by a chaotic list of presents.

What is the 5-gift rule?

The 5-gift rules follow these 5 simple premises:

  • Something they want
  • Something they need
  • Something to wear
  • Something to read
  • A special gift

Meaning, you will always put the recipient at the forefront. You can finally make an informed decision on what best fits them. But before we jump into the 5 premises, you can prepare yourself with the following:

  • Create a plan: jot down the names of each person you are shopping for and think of one or two present ideas for them. This will allow you to focus when out hunting for gifts.
  • Set some limits: figure out how much money you can spend on presents and adhere to that amount. Remember, it truly is ‘the thought that counts’!
  • Be imaginative: on a tight budget? Get creative with your offerings. Homemade items are always touching and your nearest and dearest will recognize the care taken in their selection.
  • Start early: steer clear of the Christmas Eve scramble by purchasing gifts ahead of time. Doing so will assist in keeping costs reasonable while helping to avoid buying on impulse.
  • Seek advice: need help brainstorming ideas? Ask your family and friends for assistance.

By starting with these techniques, the Holidays will be a time for more than just presents and the price tag that comes with them. This holiday season, focus on making memories and experiences around the gifts you decide to give.

Why is it a sustainable strategy?

Mindful purchasing practices, like for instance, not buying random gifts by preparing yourself with research about the recipient, is what makes the 5-gift rule extremely sustainable.

You prevent bad gifting, assuring yourself the joy in giving, and also, why not, your pockets will appreciate a bit less impulse and a bit more thought for your gifts.

The 5 pillars of the 5 gift rule, explained

You know now that following the 5 premises ensures that every gift is meaningful and appreciated.

Not only do you value the material side of gifting, but you also care about what’s behind it: you show thoughtfulness, personalization, practicality, value for money, and the element of surprise.

But now, let’s get to the point: are the 5-gift rules as simple as they sound? How do I really apply them in practice while gifting?

We got you covered, we will explain how they work – which will make your gifting process extremely enjoyable.

Something they want

It might seem obvious, but is it something they really want?

Here is where both the personalization and the thoughtfulness we talked about earlier applies.

  • What are their favorite bands, TV shows, and movies?
  • What are their interest and hobbies?

And what type of person are they: are they a foodie? Are they incredibly active? Do they daydream about travel to Thailand, or are they more of a local explorer?

Every little detail is not insignificant. In fact, that’s what makes it special. Think about it: what genuinely makes them happy and excited?

Something they need

Consider practicality: will the person use it? What does the recipient need in their daily life?

It could be anything, from household items, mugs, and notebooks, to personal accessories, like our neck gaiters and beanies.

No matter what type of lifestyle you lead, having the right clothing accessories is a must. From those who take leisurely walks through the city streets to outdoor adventurists to skiers who hit the slopes.

Or, above all, you can give them the freedom to choose what they really need with a gift card. We have some good examples here at BUFF®.

Clothing accessories you need

Something to wear

You may want to consider giving something fashionable and practical.

Think about clothes or accessories that express their personal style and taste. Your recipient will be thrilled to receive a gift that can be used in an attractive way.

Do they suffer from the cold? Are they usually outdoors doing activities or are they more fitness enthusiasts?

We have options that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional.

Something to read

For the bookworms, here comes their moment to shine.

Do they enjoy crime stories? Then a great present could be a book of Gregg Olsen, a more classical Agatha Christie. Or any type of novel or even graphic novel for curious-minded adults.

And for the children, colorful books and fairytales that spark their imagination!

A special gift

What makes your present stand out from others is the sentimental value behind it.

You can strengthen your bond with the gift-receiver by adding a touch of personalization, from custom-made cards with your gift to custom-made products, or by choosing a gift that has a greater meaning within your relationship.

Different variations of the 5 gifts rule

There are other variations on the 5-gift rule.

We present it here because you might want to adjust due to your gifting needs.

For instance, the 7 or 8-gift rule works well when you have a larger family, for both adults and kids. It is perfect for recreating some family fun during the holidays. Those who are more decisive might prefer the 3-gift rule.

The 3-gift rule

Nice and simple. The 3-gift rules are:

  • Something they want
  • Something they need
  • Something to read

The 7-gift rule

The 7-gift rules are:

  • Something you want

  • Something you need
  • Something to wear
  • Something to read
  • Something to do
  • Something for me
  • Something for the family

The 8-gift rule

Finally, the 8-gift rules are:

  • Something you want
  • Something you need
  • Something to wear
  • Something to read
  • Something used
  • Something made
  • Something to do
  • Something played
